VTP defines Layer 2 messaging protocol that allows the switches to exchange VLAN configuration information, so this will keep consistent VLAN configuration throughout the network. In short, if VLAN 3 (VLAN # 3) will be used and given the name "accounting", the configuration information can be performed on one switch, and VTP will then distribute this information to all switches.
VTP manages the addition, deletion, and changing the name of the VLAN to the switch. This can minimize misconfiguration and configuration inconsistencies that can cause problems, such as the duplication of naming a VLAN or VLAN type setting error.
VTP process begins with the manufacture of VLANs on a switch called a VTP server. Change is distributed as a broadcast to the entire network. VTP client and server will "hear" VTP messages and updating each configuration based on the message.
